Under the guidance of Dr Pinelli, the Switzerland Eye Research Institute in engaged in ongoing scientific research in refractive surgery, and aims to make a significant contribution to the advancement of the discipline at an international level.
The research work started in Italy by Roberto Pinelli in 1998, when he was in charge of the “Istituto Laser Microchirurgia Oculare” (ILMO), before he fully handed over the clinic in December 2014, led to the development and further improvement of a number of surgical techniques. These include the P-Curve procedure for the correction of presbyopia, a method Dr Pinelli has further perfected in Switzerland over the last few years, and which ultimately evolved into Pinelli Presby Profile®, a non-surgical technique that uses only photons to eliminate presbyopia. For this reason the procedure is also called “Only Laser Lasik”, because it only uses light to modify the curvature of the cornea and allow patients to discard their reading glasses.
Further innovations include osmotic transepithelial cross-linking for the treatment of keratoconus, and new pharmaceuticals such as ParaCel®, an eyewsah used in the treatment of keratoconus that allows the penetration of UV light into the cornea without the need to remove the epithelium.
The pioneering work carried out by Dr Pinelli and his team has been shared with international ophthalmic institutions, and has become a common feature in the daily practices of surgeons worldwide.
